4/17/2023 0 Comments Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Space, Place, and Transmedia StorytellingAnalysis of space: This video, taken on March 15, 2023 at the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio tour in Watford, UK, presents an interesting spin on the idea, that M. Smith argues for, that magical spaces are associated with "vibrancy and discovery" and the non-magical world with "oppression and control" (181). In this space from the final film of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011), the magical space of Gringott's bank (a space of magical capitalism) is one that now oppresses and controls access and a representative of the natural magical world (the dragon) is shown demolishing the space. This is similar to Smith's argument about the final film presenting "a new, but nevertheless, uncertain vision of a differently ordered society" (195). Transmedia storytelling: Compare this video of the in-person experience to that in the actual film below, where the action has been changed to create the feeling like you are in this space as the dragon attacks but which doesn't seem to want to situate the visitor like one of the goblins but like a child watching (as we can see at the end of the video). It's an experience of immersive terror and the sublime. In particular, you can note that the children (Harry, Hermione, and Ron) who ride on the dragon's back in the film are absent from the experience on the tour and so further invites the visitor to imagine themselves as participating in this experience.
